Gear Change Avoidance on QT-20N

It's been a while since I have been on here after resurrecting a QT-20N from the scrap yard. Everything has been going well, but there are a few things I would like to change, if possible, in the way the machine runs.

I build benchrest air rifles.....and pretty much the largest piece I turn is 1.5 OD aluminum. The machine is constantly changing gears, and I would like to avoid that if I can. I remember CNCToolcat mentioning something about being able to get the machine to operate on just one gear.....but can't find the post. At one time, I believed that my gearbox was broken beyond repair, and he showed some pictures of a similar lathe that he had removed the gearbox from and just ran direct drive. I recall him saying that there was a parameter adjustment that needed to be made. My gearbox is doing fine......but I would still like it to just stay in one gear or the other. Its a 20hp machine.....and I might use 5 percent of that on occasion. If anyone has any idea on this I would love to hear it.

The other question that I have is about the spindle braking hard prior to a tool change. If I'm facing....and it needs a different tool for the next operation.....it decelerates the spindle to a crawl while it changes tools.....only to ramp it back up when its done. Is there a way to just have the spindle continue to run during the toolchange? I had wondered if maybe I could change the P2 parameter to 0 instead of 1. I thought maybe returning to machine zero in X was what was causing the sudden braking since it may be trying to adjust sfm.

Any ideas on either one of these questions would be appreciated.

I am still absolutely loving this machine!

Thanks,

Mike
