QT20n noise at back of spindle

I got my Hitachi spindle drive running, and now have a bad noise coming from the rear of the spindle. It seems to be right in front of the belt pulley.

I can turn the spindle by hand, and it makes a sound something like a sheet metal guard rubbing on the pulley.

I thought at first it was the encoder bearings......but I took off the belt, and its still there.

I can now only imagine that it's the rear spindle bearing, but it does not get the least bit warm or anything when run for 20 minutes or so at 500 rpm.

The noise comes and goes.....nothing consistent. It was about every two turns of the spindle when moving it by hand. It really doesn't sound like a bearing.

Is there anything else that could be making this noise back there?

It kind of looks like some sort of seal there in the drawings.....but I don't see a reference to one.

I don't think I can take the thought of new spindle bearings.:cryin:
