Bar feed and sub spindle questions.

Re-doing other post here.
Can you use a bar in a bar feeder for a collet stop? Have some parts that need to be cut off and run do to length/support issues. Also, how do you do a live center with a sub spindle? Can you just mount a straight shank live center in the chuck, or dead center and match rpms?
Machine is an SQT 200 MSY with the Fusion 640T control. I am sure there wil be more questions as I get thru some of these things in programming their use further. The guy I am working with/teaching has a large Mazak mill and is seeing the similarities in programming so that helps!

Mazak newbie question

Hey guys!

I'm looking to purchase a early 90's Mazak. I found a quick turn 8 with sub spindle. The guy that owns the machine never really learned to use it. He said when he bought it there were a few simple problems that took way to long to figure out. In the meantime and out of frustration, he bought some new Haas's. Now the Mazak is fixed and with no need for it.

I would like to take the long journey to check out this machine, but there is one problem- I have never ran a turning center other then a late model Haas. I feel it can't be too hard to get the machine jogging, spindles turning, bar feed pulling, but with my luck, it will be. Is there anything I need to look out for? Are there some online manuals I could check out before hand to possibly get familiar with the control?

Also, can the sub spindle be used as a tail stock? I have seen threads of people talking about doing it with other machine makes, but wasn't sure about the Mazak.

THANKS, Andrew

Have any of you had any experience with Yamazaki, are they affiliated with Mazak?

Mazak Smart 430 and 530

I'm looking to possibly replace my 2011 Haas VF-2 with something a little bit more powerful and reliable. After buying my QT-15, the Mazak bug kind of bit me it seems.

I got a quote on the Nexus 410 and 510 and they were a bit higher than I am comfortable with. I ran across these Smart machines, which, after research, appear to just have a non-Windows based, "stripped" control. The weird thing is they are advertised as having faster rapids, and a couple other beneficial things.

From running across random pricing in threads, it seems that the Smart machines are a good bit less expensive than their Nexus counterparts as well, but that is hard to say since some of the threads were well over a year old. Has anyone had one of these for a while? Does anyone know the ballpark pricing before I go bothering the sales rep to quote something that is completely unaffordable?

My other options for VMC upgrade really only seem to be a SS Haas model, or maybe a Doosan. My current issue is that I run a decent amount of aluminum parts that have around 40-50lbs of material removed, and the Haas just seems to make a career out of it. I also do a lot of 3D surfacing and more rpm would help. Maybe I'm just telling myself that the grass is greener on the other side though.

Thanks for any info guys!

Just arrived in Bahrain and decided to check online on the status of the drive repair.

Drive was received on 3/19 and the only thing it shows so far is work in progress on the PCB SF-BS, not sure which one that is. The card with visible damage was the SR-CA card, but maybe that hasn't been addressed yet.

The quote for repair I received has gone up a couple of hundred due to it being a -KP drive, which now is $3010.00. If it goes back in without any further problems then I'm happy to pay it to get the machine back in service.

Decided to throw some of the material we had waiting to run on the Mazak onto the Hurco just to get some of them done since I thought I would be leaving on this trip sooner then I did, and was a great chance to give that 1" ripper mill I've been itching to try out.

Using 2 vises with soft jaws we started with the 6"x1.2" slugs, center bore finishes to 3.125". Ran the ripper at 6,000 RPM, 150IPM .175" DOC 65% step over and 5* ramp, cycle time was 4+05 compared to 1+45 on the Mazak, but was still better then I thought it would be. The 4-3/4"x1.5"x2" bore parts took a little less time since the the bore is smaller had to lighten up a bit cutting the bore to keep from re-cutting chips.

BTW, I was surprised that it took longer to pre-drill a 1" hole then to just ramp into the part, I'm sure most of the time was ate up by the extra tool change:crazy:

That ripper mill is one awesome tool :D

The kid will be busy shoveling chips this week!

Its been a fun day around here. We just got our new to us Mazak HCN-4000. Its replacing a really worn out HTC-400, should be a hell of an upgrade! Just a few pictures of it coming off the truck for now, I'll give an update when we get it all cleaned up and running. :cheers:Click image for larger version.

mazak mill how to run in reverse ?

had a job the other day where the only angular end mills i had were backwards or needed to be run in reverse. easy to do in a manu pro but how do you do a regular mazatrol m32 VMC cycle in reverse rotation ??
.
it happened to be i was doing a line in and was circular milling a hard part so i needed the depth cuts to slowly cut it away.
.
i do not see in tool list or tool data screen about reverse rotation tools and in over 1000 pages of the manuals do not see it mentioned. about the only time with the mazak i could not see the answer to what at first seemed a simple thing

Seems to have no chip conveyor, 8" chuck, CAM T2 (what's CAM mean anyhow?)

It's local and I know the guy that owns it. The ad says it's "fully operational" but I'm kinda wary of machines this old (im guessing late 80's, early 90's?)

Sub spindle bearing life?

Going on 13 years now. It took a very serious whack in the first year, enough to knock the stick tool out and ruin the VDI holder. Put a slight wobble in the chuck too. Had to re bore 6 sets of jaws. Funny thing is that after todays small crash the chuck body runout is a few tenths. The bearing is just a tad louder than I remember it. Anybody have any idea what is involved in the replacement? Or the cost?:cryin:

Hey guys, I need some help. I have 3 QT 15's at my shop and I have no idea what these things are worth. The were purchased back in 2004 and have not been turned on since they were put in here. I don't think they had been run for about a year before that either. Any ideas on what these are worth as is???? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

FR-SE Spindle drive stuttering

Hi guys.....I got my control back from MEAU and put her back in today.

I connected up the machine to the electric and checked phasing via the hydraulic pump. Everything was good.

Everything seems to run OK now without any parity errors.

The only problem is, my previously functioning spindle is now stuttering when you try to start it. I get no errors at all......it just stutters, as if its kinda fighting itself.

I called MEAU, and was only able to get someones brief attention, since they were getting ready to go home. They seemed to think it may be a gain issue on the FR-SE, but didn't delve into it too much before saying goodbye.

Anybody have any experience with this sort of issue?

I am on power company 3 phase 480, now. Last time it ran it was on a phase converter that was all over the place for voltage.....but it worked great.

I get 481,481,479 now......which seems fine to me.

That's really the only thing I can think of that is different from before.

Mazak Quick Turn 200 questions

Hi, I have 1999 Mazak quick turn 200 here. I tried to touch off drills with presetter but it wont give me dead center. I did not check if turret alignment is off. Since this machine has no Y so do I need to get center alignment collet chucks for drills?

What are good websites to buy holders and tools that fits Mazak? Thanks in advance!

Mazak CMT Software

Does anyone on here have any experience with this software? I have the trial version to check it out. What I'm trying to do is get some of our old Mazatrol programs from M+ controls moved over to a Matrix control. I'm told by Mazak that I can do this with this software. I have to have the old CMT box hooked into a computer with a serial port. Move the programs off of a disk in the CMT to the computer. Then move those programs from the computer to a USB flash drive and then I can load it to the Matrix control. This is only a short term solution so hopefully we don't have to re write perfectly good programs.

Now I have the CMT software loaded up. I have a 25 pin RS232 at the CMT box going down to a 9 pin serial and plugged into the serial port (COM1). When I try to pull a program from the CMT box with the software it just times out after a few seconds. I believe I have all the right settings, Com1, Baud rate, parity, etc....

Anybody got an idea what I'm missing over here?

No power QT15n spndle

Hi

I purchased a used MAZAK (1990) QT-15n T32-2.
I saw the mazak running before I purchased it. The mazak sat in our shop & only connected the mazak last week
When I first turned the mazak on I got a grey screen. After I got the mazak to 'boot" (new battery) & restored the parameters, I got 2 errors & a flashing red spindle stop light.
128 estop
228 chuck data
When I opened the back electrical cabinet none of the lights were on the sf-pw or the freqrol.
I sent the power supply for repair but still no power on the spindle drive.
A small yellow LED is on, on the sf-ca. but non of the other LED lights or the digital numbers are on
Thank You

Turret Index Position T2

$

I made a simple simple program today while I took a break from working on my spindle drive.

I only had one tool loaded, so I just made a od turning with a rough and finish pass with the same tool. I measured the tool with the tool eye, first. Seemed like everything was reasonable there.

I was able to simulate the program and see it turn my part.

I tried to single step through the program, and it would approach the part and stop (start button light would go out).....Id press the start again, then it would attempt to move the x outside the machines soft limits which brought an error. I assumed that it was doing this to index the turret to my selected tool. I was guessing this to be a parameter issue.

I decided to just use the turret index button to manually move the requested tool to the front position.

I then ran the program again, but this time it stopped on the approach, then the turret disengaged.....as if it was going to index, then just sat there until blue alarm popped up (235 I think). I can't remember what it said, now.

I'm fairly sure I need to tweak some parameters.

I just want to verify that all the programming works on the control with a few tests if I can. I realize the spindle not running properly will be an issue, I'm just trying to rule out other hidden problems.

Why would the turret unlock if the requested tool is already there?

Also, what are the tool offsets for? I think I had this tool set up as #2-0 offset. I didn't know what it wanted or what offset was for.

T2 Programming Help

I'm going to post some pics of my screen here to help.

Its just a simple program, but I cannot get it to check unless I remove the rough tool.

With the rough tool set.....I get a 534 designated form error......which says something like the rough tool has nothing to do.

I think my tools are set up right.....tool 2 is a cnmg.....tool 3 is a vnmg.

Any help would be appreciated.

I thought I would repost this here since the former title did not really describe this particular problem.

Replacing FR-SE with Hitachi WJ-200-150

$

I touched on this idea a while back when captdave was having a drive problem.

I was unaware at the time that my drive was going to poop......I had my control out for repair, and my spindle drive worked fine before that.

Anyway......I'm not interested in spending a pile of money on diagnosis and repair of my 28 year old drive. Mostly because the majority of the parts will still be 28 years old when its repaired and returned.

I'm almost ready to confidently order the Hitachi WJ-200. I can have it to my door for $1100.00.

I have mapped out the control inputs, and the drive outputs to the control......and it actually looks fairly straightforward to make the conversion.

Spindle Inputs from control as follows:

1. Analog drive voltages are standard
2. Forward
3. Reverse
4. Enable
5. I'm not exactly sure what the low and high gear orient does on the stock control. This may be something I have to control with an external plc if needed. I can live without low gear if i need to for a while. (I have revised this after looking at the ladder...it does nothing for my machine that does not have orientation.)
6. Motor thermal overload (from motor).

Spindle outputs to control:

1. Spindle normal
2. Zero speed
3. Set Speed......set when speed varies beyond set speed by a preset amount.
4. Up to Speed....set when spindle arrives at set speed.
5. Spindle load meter (haven't checked this out yet, but its probably an analog output I'm guessing.

The plg will now be disabled.....the sensorless vector drive should have no trouble holding rpm very closely. That almost eliminates Con2.

The ac inputs should be plug and play, as well as the motor outputs.

I may want an external braking resistor.....although I think it will vary speed while running just fine without one. One nice extra feature is that upon Estop the Hitachi can be set to brake immediately instead of coast like mine did when it was working.;) This is where the external might be handy to maximize the braking power and get the spindle stopped as quickly as possible.

Anybody see anything I'm missing.

Mazak QT15 handling question.

Hey guys!

Can a QT-15 turning center be lifted from the top of the machine via eye bolts?

The reason I am asking is I am in the market for one and I'm wondering once I get it home how I'm going to unload it. I have a guy with a tractor trailer wrecker with one of those massive cranes on the back that unloaded my Fadal at a very reasonable price and was hoping he could do the same with a Mazak.

Thanks!

Replacing FR-SE with Hitachi L700

$

I'm renaming my original thread because the Hitachi (WJ-200) drive I was considering was actually not compatible, since it only has 2 outputs.

So....I ended up buying a Hitachi L700 instead. It has 5 outputs. Its still a sensorless vector drive.

The only problem I see so far is that the Hitachi outputs are open collector, or sinking outputs. The FR-SE outputs are sourcing. The control will be expecting 24v for an active signal (1)...... but, the Hitachi will be outputting a 24v signal from the internal pullup, then sink to 0 when active (1). This is backwards.

It looks like I will need to use a relay to invert the outputs. I have a bunch of extra ice cube locations on my relay board, so I guess I will run them over to there.

Nothing is really that time sensitive that a little delay from an added relay will affect. (I think)

The inputs on the Hitachi are configurable to either source or sink.....so there shouldn't be an issue there.

Drive should be here by Thursday, so I have some time to get the FR-SE pulled out.

I haven't decided, yet......but I may just use the base part of the FR-SE as a mount since the contactor, CB-1 shutoff, and all the wires are already to length for its configuration.

I'll try to keep posting progress pictures and text of what I'm doing......although it's not one of my strong points. I often get too wrapped up in things to remember to take pictures until its too late. I will try, though.:D

Mazak H400

I have a problem with my H-400. The control is M-32. The table is a one degree indexer. The problem is that when I try to rotate the table, I get a Tach Loss alarm led on my MT controller. Above the operater door, the table and tool position display, starts flashing 333 111. Book says this is a loss of A or B phase signal from the table. I have rang out all the wires and cables. I have replaced the drive motor with attached tach generator. I have replaced opticoder on the end of the worm shaft. I have replaced MT controller. None of these items have helped solve the problem. There is one last item in the mix. It is called a Mazak sequencer Three boards stacked one on the other. Bottom or base board has a battery on it. It went low and I lost the parameters stored on it. I have tried to reset them according to the prodedure in the manual and I think they are right, but if they are wrong could this generate a tach loss alarm. Or do you have any other ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem?

Thanks for your help!
