M32 mill just fried :(

Bad smell in the electrical cabinet.

Alarm 74 (i think) Buss Error

36 shows on the first two drives (MR-S1-100) and on the spindle drive, FR SF

Mazak tech says it's not recognizing the drives for some reason and he recommended a service tech since it was too deep to diganose on the phone. I have a local guy on his way over today or tomorrow so we'll see what he says. Mazak mentioned backing up the parameters, wiping them out and reinstalling software. Let me tell you how much that thrills me. I don't have backups but I do have pictures of all the parameter pages so there's that at least.

Anyone been through this or anything similar?

I bought this mill for $5k almost three years ago and it's always made me money so it really doesn't owe me anything. And I would like something bigger with more rpm, TSC, etc but I really do enjoy no payment so I'll try hard to fix it.

QT 200 MSY milling head trouble

Hi All,

I have seen a couple of alarms pop up in the last day or so. I am curious to know if there have been any other similar experiences and what you have done to remedy the issue.

The alarms have been as follows.

272 turret index exceed time
285 c-axis connect exceed time
251 milling motor rotation prohib.
239 milling coupling sensor malf.

I have had the cover off of the front of the turret and have seen the motor engage and disengage. Two things are happening.

1. The sensor to signal that the milling motor has retracted is not always signalling. When the motor disengages, it will retract but not all the way. The LED does not come on. I can push it back by hand only .050" to .100" and the light comes on. This will allow for continued operation.

2. After the 239 alarm it will not maintain an engagement with the live tool. The back sensor is not turning off or even flickering that red green as it usually does when engaging. I think this is keeping the plunger from staying engaged on the live tool.

I have traced the sensor wires back and have not found a break or kink in them anywhere. The only place I can't get to is through the center of the turret. I have loosened up the zip ties to allow room to pull the wire through to wiggle to check for a loose connection however through the turret is the problem spot. The wires are pulled really tight at the sensor and they must be zip tied through the turret near the mill spindle because I can't pull it through.

Now for the question; how difficult is it to remove the milling head from the center of the turret? How can I know for sure if it is this sensor before I go and pull this all apart?

We just bought our first set of cnc machines. We got a smart 530c and a smart 250 lathe. We have several employees including me that come with a background in running the mazak mill. So it has been fun returing to
running stuff like we were use to ( all manual equipment before these). The problem is no one is very familiar with the lathe. I am trying to run a test piece for a 1.5inch x 3tpi double lead stem nut. Started with drilling then boring to minor id. Spent next 4 hours trying to get a decent looking bore. Me another guy with 34 years experience tried everything we could think of. I started with a 5/8" right hand inserted boring bar at 400sf .03 depth and .012 feed. Part looked like I tried to cut it with a torch. Long story shorter we tried .75 bar and a 1in bar same results chattering no matter speeds or feeds. Same .75 inserted bar runs great on manual machine 450 rpm .03 depth .012 feed no chatter. This machine the only thing I got to work was 50 sf .02 depth .008 feed. Anything much over 100 rpm and it sings to the gods. Even tried different nose radius and home made cemented carbide boring bar. Hypothetically if someone was to rapid the tailstock into a 10" long 1.5" bar with 300 psi chuck pressure not turning and slide said part in slick jaws 1 in would the spindle bearings play into this chatter. I finished a home made threading bar with the tailstock 10 in long .75 ran within .0002 length of part. Then started the boring with trouble. Any thoughts. Forgot to add material is yellow brass.

G code on my mazaks?

i have a bunch of mazak lathes in the 1990-96 year range, with t plus, t-32, and 1 fusion controller and im trying to find which ones if any actually accept g code progs. if they dont accept it id like to find out exactly what it is going to take hardware and $$ wise to get them to accept g code.

i have called mazak before but nobody can give me the info. they always say they will call me back and never do. maybe i should call a mazak dealer idk....

all our mazak lathes have the connection to take a EIA progs but i dont think they have the option or the board... but nobody can easily tell me..

i have seen a work around prog that can take your posted EIA progs and convert it to mazatrol but i dont really want that. seems like it will follow mazak parameters and disregaurd the settings i have chosen in cad for certain things.

who is the best to talk to about this? whats the best way to get the answers i seek?

Hi All

finally got power to the shed today..

We connected up the manual Knee Mill but had it running backwards and had the same with the lathe.. they were both working correctly in the old place so a quick change of wires at the meter box and they were both doing their thing.

Finally moved to connecting the Mazak...
Figured that a good indicator if it was wired in the right direction would be to see which way the chip conveyor was turning and use that as an indicator....

to get the conveyor running, we had to clear all alarms/ estops and reset the unit (screen was on and working). The conveyor was able to be started but was running in the opposite direction (ie- forward direction had the top strand of conveyor going downhill).

Q1) If I reverse the wires, is there something else in the unit that may be affected?

The other thing we noticed was oil running down the head. on closer inspection tonight, i found an elbow on the right hand side of the head with no hose connected (approx 1" or so fitting)

I found a whole heap of oil in the pan conveyor when I picked the machine up. Wasn't sure if it was part of the operational requirements but now that I have this "leak" I assume that isnt normal either. From what I am hypothesising this may be the oil return from the head.

Q2) can anyone point me to where the return line should be going to? ( I assume its there but may have been disconnected :scratchchin:)

The machine had been sitting for a while so as expected the parameters are nothing like the manual. I need to replace the batteries, but the thing I noticed is that the parameters tab doesn't appear to have all the parameters showing up..

Q3) What am I missing in scrolling through? is there another key I need to press to see the parameters that arent showing up? (eg additional pages of the same section)

will spend some time tomorrow cleaning and seeing what else requires work now that I have lights on the old girl

Cheers

Mick

Question for SQT**M owners.

Hi, last year I bought my first c-axis lathe, a 1990 ST20-ATC which has bought in a lot of work and helped speed up existing jobs. I am now looking at replacing my faithful old QT15 with a SQT10M, 15M or 18M. My question is how well do these machines perform on the milling side compared to each other? I can live with the smaller 10M for turning but not if it's milling is very weak, likewise I could live with a bigger 18M but if it's milling capability is not much better than a 10M then I'd prefer the smaller machine (there's 2 for sale at the moment for c£15k). My budget is £30k.

Regards,

Glenn.

machine hung just before it removed the tool from the spindle. alarm 340 (controller error) my compadre looked up the alarm and it said to shut Down and restart. he did that (against my objections by the way) so now I have no home positions and can get anything in the atc to move except the door using the jog cw/ccw keys.

We have contacted mazak with help to clear a alarm 10 Detector Malfunction. He set us the procedure to set home possition only he did not disclose how to get into the parameters that need to be set. VCS-530C Smart Control. We know what paramaters to change but cant see them. I haver tried Paramaters and there is no version button. I tried Dianostic, Version and there is no version button I can not find any where we need to enter the 1311 number to gain access. I need to chage the RB Parameters. Thanks David

QTN-20 with T-plus controller mid 90's edition need to make chips

Good day folks,

I have found myself into a situation helping a local business get some tools up and running that they got at an auction.

They are powered up and seem to be in good shape and have all of their parameters.

The lathe is a Quick Turn N - 20 with T plus controller.

I have a broken hand currently and the hardest thing for me to do right now is type so I will keep this brief on this post.

The lathe has no chuck or draw tube. The only thing present is a spindle nose taper with many threaded bolt holes surrounding it.

Appears the previous owner could have been running manual scroll chuck? Anyone know what spindle nose this machine has?

I have some of the manuals, but left some behind....apparently the chuck info is in the manuals I didn't bring home.

Any info, stories, anything about this lathe will be greatly appreciated.

btw...I have a QT-8 at my day job with T-2 programer so I'm not totally lost but still very naive....

thanks,
Joey

Hello,

I am helping a local business get some machines up and running that they got at auction.

this mill is totally foreign to me but I run a QT8 at work so a little familiar with the mazak stuff.

I have a lot of questions but i cant type very good right now.

For starters the machine has a home 1 and home 2. I assume one is for the x (table) and one is for the y (spindle)

also there is a gadget that is affixed to the table corner it sits on top of a pin and has a pin sticking up out of it. It seems like it could be a tool setter? Seems incomplete though?? Can you just touch the tool on the top and sides of that pin?

Any thing you can tell me about this machine will be greatly appreciated.

btw...this has the M plus controller.

Thanks,
Joey

M58 on Mazak Matrix Nexus control?

$

Hello -

We have a customer supplied program and they have the same machine (Make, Model) as my place does and we are using their program (as instructed). It's on a Mazak Horizontal Machining Center with a Matrix Nexus control. We are using EIA/ISO format.

They don't use G43's in their program, so I was hoping someone could tell me how the machine picks up length offsets without a G43. Here is a snippet of their program:

N370 M6
N380 M58
N390 G65P9050
N400 S827M3
N410 G0G54.1P1
N420 G90G17X-.0004Y8.58268B0.T19
N430 Z4.6285
N440 G94G64G42D18G1X3.0196F49.62
N450 G2X-6.17619Y13.69685I-6.02J0.
N460 G1X-3.0004

The Sub Program 9050 is just a program that makes sure the correct work offsets are loaded for the pallet that is in the machine. There are no G43's, just an "IF[#51997EQ2]GOTO2" and a bunch of #7001=#811, #7002=#812, etc.

Anyway, what is a G58 on this control? I can't find a definition even if I google it.

Thanks for any help.

Mplus upload tool data

I'm reloading the parameters in my HTC 400.

The machine is up and running again but I still need to load the Tool Data.

When I sent the original data to my laptop using the computer IO key I got an ascii text file I can read.

I took some parts of the ascii file and pasted it into a program to write data back to the registers.

For example,

G10L10P1R7.34
G10L10P2R5.0
G10L10P3R2.344

writes to the tool offset registers.

G10L2P1X-10.Y-5.Z-12.
G10L2P2X-9.Y-3.Z-14.

writes to the work offset registers G54 and G55,

This data was written from the machine. Interestingly, the machine output some data I had to remove from some of the lines. The two work offsets were originally output as having an A, B, and C axis. (G10L2P1X-10.Y-5.Z-12.A0.B0.C0.) When I tried to run the data as output from the machine I got an error invalid data.

I want to try to load the Tool Data also but I am getting an invalid L number

This is a sample of data output by the machine:
G10L41T5P0C15D0.12S0I0E0.H4.7459K0.R0.J0Q21062(485 3532020202020)
G10L42T5P0K0S0R0E0N0

Anyone know how I can get this info back in the machine without entering it manually?

Quick turn 15 PLC battery

I am in the process of changing the batteries for the PLC memory on all the CNCs in the shop and I can not find where the battery is located on our Mazak Quick Turn 15. Or what type of battery it is. I am starting to guess it is soldered to a buried board. Any one help me out? It would be greatly appreciated.
And I don't have complete manuals for this machine, but it is not in the info I do have.

218 alarm QT20, T+ control

Hello,

Our rock solid 1995 QT 20 has been struggling lately. Fan on the main motor seemed to be noisy, beyond just dirty, and seemingly bringing down the control. Replaced it, ran fine but the control would just turn off. Max from Mazak figured out the fan on top of the CUP was not working, Mitsubishi figured out the QX141 board was toast. but in the mean time the control was putting a 218 alarm, "Type of chucking operation (inner/outer) is not selected" I addition , in the book it adds "Outer chucking was selected for a collet chuck"
Replaced the fan and QX141 board, everything seem to be operational, off-on, homes, turret rotate, hyd pump, even input the date and time but the 218 alarm will not allow me to turn on the spindle, my assumption.

Ok, go to "machine" and soft key "chuck" and it just blanks out the soft keys. I am not at the shop but as I am going through the parameter book that there was a switch in the electrical cabinet that controlled the chuck "ID/OD", perhaps that got bumped or it failed ?

As I said, the error message started when Max started working with the machine, changing the QX141 board made no difference.

The fan being bad above the boards explained a lot of things, the control, out of nowhere would just shut off, perhaps once every few months. I did not even know there was a fan on top of the rack, for those of you with these machines, the fan is $150 from Mitsubishi, a lot cheaper than a a QX141 board.

Help diagnosing very loud spindle on a 2001 quick turn 200

We recently received a 2001 quick turn with a 640t control and the spindle is shockingly loud. It sounds like a rock tumbler, its not a whine or grinding noise its lower pitched but not a drone, rock tumbler... I checked the belt condition and tension and oil levels and everything seems good. It leaves a great surface finish, and cuts straight even at high spindle speeds (tested it at 4000 rpm). Even though it cut well I still suspected the bearings so I let it idle at 3000 rpm for 6 hours to see if anything it would get hot, i would stop the spindle a check it every time I passed by and I couldn't even find a warm spot. I know this was dangerous to the spindle but at the price I got this machine at I can afford a new spindle and still easily come out ahead.
This is my 8th mazak and my 7th cnc lathe (haas and mazak) so I know this sound is abnormal. Having a conversation standing next to it is like have a conversation on the interstate, doing 70 with the windows down, we are literally yelling to be heard. This machine came with a with a lns bar feeder and the only reason I mention it is because it also has a spindle extender hanging off the back of the spindle (protruding from the sheet metal). The bar feeder is set up to handle 3' bars and the spindle is somewhat shorter than that so this tube makes up the distance and is also where the spindle liner is bolted to.
We have been running and making parts on this machine for a few days now with no alarms, change in the sound, problems with accuracy or finish, or hot spots. The only reason I am reaching out is because the sound is killing moral around the shop. You can hear the machine going from 100ft away outside the building.

Thanks in advance guys.

EDIT: I forgot to mention this machine is also equipped with an air actuated collet closer from production dynamics so maybe its the rotary union (or whatever it's called on an air chuck)

Mazak QT-20N Tailstock Hydraulic Leak

$

Howdy Everyone,

I've got a new (to me) Mazak QT-20N that just got installed today. Thus far everything looks OK except for a leak in the bottom of the tailstock. Before really digging into it, I figured I'd see if anyone has had a similar issue. Both the spindle and the tailstock body are hydraulically operated. The spindle extends and retracts just fine and the tailstock body does move both toward and away from the chuck. But, I've got a gushing leak out of the bottom of the tailstock body. This leak starts the minute the control is turned on and keeps flowing independent of the operation of the tailstock. It seems to be fed from the hose on the bottom right-hand corner of the rear of the tailstock body. Any thoughts before I go through the effort of pulling the tailstock from the machine?

QT28 Turret Alignment

Hello all!
I am just getting into re-aligning my 1995 QT28N after re-assembling the turret. (For some more background, check out why I had to do this here). I have found some pretty helpful threads here, here, here, & here.

My questions still are:
  1. After I get the taper pins out of the curvic coupling, do I tighten the mounting bolts back to their torque spec BEFORE I align it? I have seen some pictures of some awfully long torque arms, and it made me curious to know why the alignment was so difficult...
  2. Should I just assume that the taper pins in both the turret AND the X-Axis casting are shot and need removed, or is it safe to start at the outer face of the turret without removing it from the spline shaft in order to try and save time?

Thanks for the brilliance!

Broaching an ID key way on SQT-15 M T+ control

We're looking at a job that requires a 1/4" key way in a 1" ID bore 1.5" deep in 6061 material 500 pieces.

Looking at Razorform tools and from the videos they seem to work well.

My question lies in how would you program this in Mazatol, a manual block or is this a G code job?

Any examples of similar operations would be appreciated.
